29th APEC HRDWG Meeting in Australia

The 29th APEC Human Resources Development Working Group (HRDWG) Meeting was convened in Brisbane, Australia between April 17 and 20 with the presence of around 100 delegates from 16 member economies.
Starting from the presentations and discussions on the topics of ‘Quality in Education’ and ‘Labour and Social Protection for Growth,’ the participants deliberated current issues of HRD and other relevant matters. In particular, the delegates could have a chance to deliberate them as a group discussion and carry out practical ideas on those topics. While finishing four-day meeting, member economies recognized 9 new projects and reviewed working plan and terms of reference (TOR) of HRDWG proposed by new Lead Shepherd (Dr. Alan Ginsburg) as well as the vision of Lead Shepherd. In addition, APEC secretariat presented new version of project database system.
For more specific proceedings, attendees participated in each network meeting: Education Network (EDNET), Capacity Building Network (CBN), and Labor Social Protect Network (LSPN).
In particular, the new EDNET Coordinator (Dr. YoungHwan Kim) conducted the 23rd EDNET Meeting as a chair from April 18 to 19 including its pre-session on April 16. Through opening remarks, he asked member economies to crystallize the tradition of cooperation and pursue the recommendations of the 3rd APEC Education Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) such as balancing the economic goals and non-economic goals of education.
Regarding the 4th AEMM hosted by Peru in 2008 and its Pre-Ministerial Symposium, the EDNET Coordinator recommended host economies to carry out themes and subjects for the meetings reflecting member economies’ needs and inherit the priorities of the 3rd AEMM for supporting and developing the accomplishments of EDNET for last years. In this respect, he proposed the title of the Pre-Ministerial Symposium as ‘Respecting the Past and Envisioning the Future’.
In addition, Dr. Kim inspired member economies to review the objectives and activities of EDNET mentioned at the TOR of HRDWG and reported the outcomes to the plenary session of HRDWG. With the support of member economies’ delegates, the new Coordinator concluded the meeting successfully.
Regarding reports on projects in EDNET, there were 8 progress reports including the following: APEC Learning Community for Shared Prosperity (ALCom), APEC Future Education Consortium, and APEC e-Learning Training Program. With the outcomes of these projects, member economies welcomed and appreciated the efforts of Korea and participating economies and asked consistent and further strides for those projects.
